Thirukozhi - Nachiar Koil

Thirukkozhi

( Nachiar Koil - Uraiyur)

Thirukkozhi temple in Uraiyur

Thirukkozhi also now known as Nachiar Koil is one of the 108 divya desams in Uraiyur, Trichy. Naachiyaar Koil or Thiru kkozhi in Uraiyur is one of the few Divya Desams where the Thayar (Goddess) has prominence over the Lord. Some of the other Divya Desams where Thayar is dominant are Srivilliputhur, NNaachiyar Koil near Kumbakonam and Thiruvellarai. There is no separate Sannidhi for Goddess and she is always seen together with the Lord.

The legend behind the temple goes thus. Rishi Brighu once cursed Sri Lakshmi to be born as a human.

In the earth, a king named Nandha Cholan who was longing for a child was advised by sages to pray towards Mahalakshmi. His prayers were answered and he found a female child near a lotus pond . (This was none other than Sri Lakshmi who came to earth as per the Brighu Muni's curse.) He named her as Kamalavalli meaning , a child of lotus and doted on her. When the Kamalavalli grew up, she went to a festival at Sri Rangam and admired the beauty of Lord Ranganathar and pledged to marry Him. Lord Ranganathar appeared in the dream of King Nandha Cholan and told him that his child is none but the Sri Mahalakshmi and Lord Ranganathar will marry Her. He dressed Kamalavalli in a bride's attire and took Her to Sri Rangam Ranganathar Temple. When Kamalavalli went near Lord Ranganathar, she vanished and Lord has accepted Her. King Nandha Cholan came to Uraiyur and built a temple to mark the marriage of Lord Ranganathar and his daughter Kamalavalli.

Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal

This is the birth place of Thiru Baanazhwar. There is a sannidhi for him too.

As Lordess Kamalavalli went to Sri Rangam and married the Lord Ranganathar, there is no separate prakaram for thayar Kamalavalli Nachiyar. She is here along with the Mulavar carrying the Lotus on Her hands in the sitting position as his bride. As there is no utsavar in this temple, Sri Rangam Ranganathar Temple utsavar will be brought here for the Kalyana uthsavam celebrated on Panguni (March-April) Pooram day.

The Moolavar of this sthalam is Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal. The Moolavar is giving his seva in a standing posture facing North in kalyana thirukolam ( wedding attire).
