Alwarthirunagari Adhinatha Permual Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and a Nava Tirupathi located in Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, Tamil Nadu, South India in the banks of Thamiraparani river. This is also called as Navagraha Tirupathis because each of the Navagrahas is said to have worshipped at the temples here. In that aspect this is dedicated to Guru or Jupiter. Alwar Tirunagari is also called as Thirugurukur is said to be the largest town in the time of Pandya kings. The place is said to be the birthplace of Nammalvar.

Surrounded by big granite compond walls this temple has a three tiered gopuram which is around 100 ft tall. There are two pushkaranis inside the compound and one outside the temple. There is a big mandapam called Pandhal mandapam is seen as you enter. As you enter the inner praharam you can see the sannidhis of Venugopla swamy,Garudan and Gnanabiran. We can see exiquisite stone sculptures and carvings in the pillars of this temple.
The sannidhi of thayaar Adhinachiyar is located to the right of the Adhinathar and to the left is the Thirugurukurvalli Nachiyar sannidhis are seen. There are sannidhis for Paramapadha nathar,Chakrathazhwar sannidhis seen behind th emain sannidhi.The sannidhis of Garuda with eight serpents, Anjaneya are seen.

As you come out in the open area, you can see the big Tamarind tree where Saint Nammalwar is said to have performed penance for 14 years. Poojas and aradhanais are done to this Tamarind tree, which is also the Sthala Vriksham here. Next to this is the sannidhi of saint Nammalwar.

The Moolavar here is Adhi Nathan and is found in a nindra kolam(standing posture) facing the east with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi.Moolavar is majestic and is around 6 feet tall and is said to be swayambu (self manifested) and his feet is said to be buried in the ground here.Prathyaksham for Brahma,Madurakavi and Nammalwar.

Mangalaasasanam The temple is revered by the verses of Nammalwar.

Festivals During the Garuda Sevai utsavam(festival) in the month of Vaikasi(May-Jun) there are nine Garudasevai, a big event in which the utsava murthis from the Nava Tirupathis in the area are brought on Garuda vahana. Utsavar of Nammalvar is also brought here on a Hamsa Vahanam(Swan) and his verses dedicated to each of these nine temples are recited. The utsavar of Nammalvar is taken to each of the nine temples. The paasurams dedicated to each of the nine Divyadesams are chanted in the respective Tirupathis. This festivals draws thousands of visitors from nearby areas.

Temple Timings The temple is open from 5:30 AM till 12:00 noon and from 4:00 pm till 8:30 pm

How to reach?
It has a Railway station with trains from Madurai,Tirunelveli,Tiruchendur passing through here. The temple is just a kilometre from the station. It is well connected by state highways roads. Take your car or hire a cab to visit all the nine Tirupathis, going by the local bus is time consuming. If you are only three or less travellers, local auto rickshaws are the cheapest and best mode of transport.Negotiate and fix a rate for the day trip.
Where to Stay? There are no big hotels here but a few choultries and the math of Ahobilam. Tiruchendur or Tirunelveli which are under 30 kms from here would be ideal place for stay
Where to eat There are no big restauarants here.Use your judgement to find a hygienic place to eat in the available eateries.
Other interesting places around Alwar Thirunagari. The other eight Nava Tirupathis are within a day's visit from here. Tiruchendur temple is a must visit temple from here.
